SUMMARY:Utah LTAP: TCT - Traffic Control Technician
DESCRIPTION:Trainer: Ed Rufener \nThe Traffic Control technician course is offered as an introduction to the basic principles of temporary work zone traffic control.  This training course is designed to instruct the participants in the underlying principles of temporary traffic control as set forth in the MUTCD. \nIn this course students will be provided with practical knowledge\, techniques\, and instruction on the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices to enable them to apply practical concepts.  This course is recommended for all workers who may be required to handle temporary traffic control devices; and is accepted by UDOT. \nWorkers are required to complete and pass a written examination. Training is good for 4 years. Certificates are no longer sent by ATSSA.  You can get a copy of your certificate from your LTAP account. \nAs a traffic control technician you are meeting the UDOT requirement to maintain and set up traffic control in an active work zone. UDOT requires that you pass the TCT State Specific course with a score of 80%\, have one year (2000 hours) of temporary traffic control experience. This training is valid for four (4) years\, at the end of the four year period you are required to take the course again.  This course teaches you how to correctly place temporary traffic control devices in an active work zone. This course does not certify you to be a flagger. This course is a prerequisite to becoming a Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS). \nThe APWA and UDOT specifications as outlined in Traffic Control 01554 Section 1.9 requires that the Traffic Control Technician be certified by the Department or by the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) as a Traffic Control Technician (TCT). Since receiving a $20 million federal grant in June 2024\, UDOT has been leading a large-scale V2X deployment effort alongside the Colorado and Wyoming Departments of Transportation. During Phase 1\, the project team designed\, built\, and tested connected transportation infrastructure across a 1\,200-mile corridor\, deploying applications including LiDAR detection\, snowplow signal preemption\, and Traveler Information Messages. This session will cover the Systems Engineering process that guided deployment\, real-world performance insights from the field\, key lessons learned\, and what comes next heading into Phase 2. This webinar is open to transportation professionals\, technology partners\, researchers\, and anyone with an interest in connected and automated transportation.
