SUMMARY:Western TTAP: Heavy Equipment Operations and Safety Training
DESCRIPTION:Please note: you must attend the entire training to receive a certificate of completion. \nCourse Summary:\nThis comprehensive\, hands-on training course provides participants with essential knowledge and practical skills for safely operating and working around dump trucks\, forklifts\, motor graders\, and skid steers. The course covers equipment orientation\, work zone setup (both internal and external)\, and critical safety practices for operators and pedestrian workers. Participants will also learn key principles of vehicle operation\, load securement\, inspection procedures\, and the use of pre-trip and pre-job checklists to ensure safe and efficient operations. \nThrough a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on activities\, attendees will gain experience in safe equipment operation\, including traveling with loads\, working on inclines\, managing high-level stowage\, and navigating various job site conditions such as loading docks and temporary traffic control zones. Emphasis is placed on hazard awareness\, proper equipment use\, and best practices for maintaining safe\, productive work environments across a variety of construction and transportation settings. \nLearning Objectives:\nBy the end of this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nList the 12 absolute rules operators must obey.\nUse checklists to ensure equipment is operating safely.\nUse site safety practices and recognize warning signs.\nIdentify various pieces of heavy equipment by the features of each piece of equipment.\nEliminate bad driving habits while operating heavy equipment.\nUnderstand the placement and use of cones\, barricades\, caution tape and other barriers.\nAssess proper direction of travel based on the load\, acceptable approach angles\, travel within delineated lines\, and the correct use of spotters.\n\nPrerequisites:\nNone. \nTarget Audience:\nThis course is designed for tribal DOT\, municipal public works\, parks\, streets/roads\, water\, wastewater\, distribution/collection and/or storm water utility workers or any other tribal entity employees who may be called on to operate the equipment featured in this course. \nThis training is also recommended for emergency alternate personnel who may be called on to use the equipment in special circumstances\, such as after a natural disaster or any other reason where no other operators are available. DESCRIPTION:Course Overview: \nThis workshop will cover why proper flagger operations are important\, the skillset of a good flagger\, standard flagger control references\, and best practices for various situations. \nThis interactive workshop is taught through a combination of lecture\, video\, and group activities. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe why practicing safe\, standards-based flagging operations is important.\nList the component parts and associate elements of standard flagging setups.\nRecognize key elements of proper flagging signals and procedures.\nRecall factors used for determining proper flagger station positioning.\nDescribe basic flagging techniques using one or more flaggers under various scenarios.\nList effective flagger communication techniques for use between flaggers\, with motorists\, and work other workers.\nDescribe nighttime considerations\, setup and removal\, and use of flagging technology.\n\nAudience: \nThis course is intended for anyone interested in becoming a certified road flagger. ATSSA is a recognized flagger certification in the state of Nevada and valid for all NDOT projects. \nParticipants DO NOT need to employed by a public agency or a unionized company to take this course. \nNOTE: ATSSA Certification cards are good for 4-years & participants MUST be 18 years of age to participate. Upon enrollment\, a copy of the participant’s valid driver’s license or state ID will be required.
