SUMMARY:Center for Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety (CPBS): Spatial and Temporal Shifts in Pedestrian Serious Injuries and Fatalities (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 17\, 2025\nTime: 11:00 am to 12:00 pm PT\nLocation: Virtual\nCost: Free\nOrganization: Center for Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety (CPBS) \n\n\nPedestrian fatalities in the US increased over 83% between 2009 and 2022\, substantially more than the 16% increase for vehicle occupant fatalities over the same period. Past research has identified important relationships between these recent pedestrian safety outcomes and street design (e.g.\, arterials and midblock crossings) and motor vehicle design (e.g.\, the higher prevalence and larger dimensions of light trucks). But how have pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries shifted in the larger geospatial context? This webinar explores how pedestrian safety issues have shifted on the urban/suburban/rural continuum\, identifying a shift in pedestrian crashes toward the suburbs. Neighborhood-scale analyses also identify pedestrian fatality and serious injury concentrations around retail and other small-scale commercial establishments and public transit. This work harmonizes planning and engineering research into a more complete story of the recent pedestrian safety crisis.

SUMMARY:Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) America: Data Rich\, Insight Poor? Making Transportation Intelligence Work (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 17\, 2025\nTime: 11:00 am to 12:00 pm PT\nLocation: Virtual\nCost: Free\nOrganization: Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) America \nData is not the problem—action is. Across the country\, transportation agencies are sitting on vast streams of information—signal performance data\, crash feeds\, traveler info systems\, sensor arrays\, and vendor APIs. But the more data we generate\, the harder it becomes to do something with it. This session explores how leading agencies are tackling data paralysis by building clear pipelines from raw data to decision-grade intelligence. Whether through federated data platforms\, predictive dashboards\, or embedded analytics in operations centers\, we will unpack how the right strategy can transform data overload into meaningful\, day-to-day impact. If your agency has all the tools and still cannot get the answers—it is time to fix the insight gap.

SUMMARY:Vision Zero Network: Slow Down Speeders - Using Intelligent Speed Assistance in Your Community (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 16\, 2025\nTime: 9:00 am to 10:00 am PT\nLocation: Virtual\nCost: Free\nOrganization: Vision Zero Network \nLocal governments have more practical tools to curb dangerous speeding than you may realize. \nJoin Vision Zero Network to learn why cities should add Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) to their speed management toolkits both for their internal operations and for combating “super speeders” in their community. \nYou’ll hear from those piloting and using ISA in their fleets and also partnering on state-level policies to address repeat super-speeding. Vision Zero Network encourages Vision Zero practitioners to explore how ISA can complement other key strategies\, such as road design\, lower speed limits\, speed safety cameras and others to manage speeds for safety. \nSpeakers include Eric Richardson\, a world-recognized fleet safety expert with Together for Safer Roads; Charlie Willson\, Acting Vision Zero Manager for Washington\, DC; and Tom DeVito\, National Director at Families for Safe Streets. Attendees – particularly city staff advancing Vision Zero – will leave with clear policy levers\, procurement tips\, and communication strategies to put ISA to work now and strengthen legislative efforts against speeding. \n

SUMMARY:Road Safety Champion Program – Module 6: Reading the Road
DESCRIPTION:The overall Road Safety Champion Program provides a high-level overview of road safety in the United States through seven modules. \nModule 6: \nThis 2.5-hour training will teach participants how to “read the road” as well as the importance of doing so in daily activities. It will use real world examples on different roadway components to demonstrate how participants may be able to uncover potential safety issues during their routine activities.  It will also discuss how the road safety audit process can be used to “read the road” in a more formal approach. The training will also discuss the consequences daily activities of workers may have on safety. \nLearning Objectives: \nAfter attending training\, you will be able to: \n\nDefine what is meant by “reading the road.”\nIdentify potential safety issues or identify any indications which suggest road users may have challenges traveling or navigating a roadway.\nIdentify “reading the road” steps in the Road Safety Audit (RSA) process.\nDemonstrate the steps of an RSA.

SUMMARY:FHWA Webinar: All About Adaptive Lighting (Every Day Counts Round 7 Series)
DESCRIPTION:Adaptive roadway lighting is the lowering or raising of the light level based on the needs of the context of the roadway and the users. With the introduction of new control and ballast technology that LED luminaires provide\, roadway lighting can be adapted to accommodate changes on the roadway such as traffic volumes\, weather conditions\, existing or background lighting conditions and pedestrian usage as well as address over-lighting and light trespass. Adaptive lighting also provides maintenance benefits by extending the life of lamps and drivers and increase the efficiency of maintenance staff. During the webinar\, roadway lighting experts will also share in-situ installations and results in terms of safety\, road users’ impressions and energy usage. This is a great opportunity to hear the latest in the technology and answer your questions. \n
