SUMMARY:Transportation Research and Education Center (TREC): Evaluating Leading Pedestrian Intervals and Curb Extensions Through Conflict Analysis (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Webinar: Evaluating Leading Pedestrian Intervals and Curb Extensions Through Conflict Analysis\nDate: April 10\, 2026\nTime: 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm PT\nCost: Free \nContinuing Education Credits: 1 PDH credit\, 1 AICP CM credit\nOrganization: Transportation Research and Education Center (TREC)  \nLeading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs) and curb extensions are widely used street design strategies intended to improve pedestrian safety at signalized intersections. However\, while LPIs have a well-documented crash reduction record\, fewer studies have examined how these treatments influence near-miss interactions or how geometric changes like curb extensions interact with signal timing strategies. \nThis seminar presents findings from a Master’s thesis that evaluated the safety impacts of LPIs and curb extensions using detailed conflict data collected at signalized intersections in the Portland\, Oregon metropolitan area. Approximately 600 hours of video were manually reviewed to identify pedestrian crossings\, vehicle movements\, and conflict events using Post Encroachment Time (PET) and turning-speed thresholds. The analysis combined descriptive statistics\, statistical tests\, and regression modeling to understand both conflict frequency and severity. \nResults show that LPIs are consistently associated with lower pedestrian–vehicle conflict frequency\, while intersections with both LPIs and curb extensions generally exhibited lower proportions of high-severity conflicts. The presentation will discuss the methodology\, key findings\, and practical implications for agencies considering pedestrian safety treatments.

DESCRIPTION:Nevada LTAP has kindly reserved 5 seats for tribal members and employees. \nCourse Summary: \nRoadway plans are developed to provide a pictorial view of the existing facilities and proposed improvements on a particular section of undeveloped land or existing roadway. They convey information relevant to the construction of the roadway\, ranging from the quantities of construction materials required to the horizontal layout of the roadway. Reading a set of plans can seem overwhelming but at the conclusion of this class every student will possess the knowledge to read a set of plans\, calculate quantities\, measure distances as well as many other issues related to roadway plan interpretation. \nThis lively class will change the way one thinks about reading and understanding roadway construction plans. Participants will learn the primary elements of a set of roadway plans and what each element contains. The course will touch on the title sheet\, schematic plan\, utility plan\, typical sections\, general notes\, maintenance of traffic plans\, plan/profile sheets\, cross sections\, and miscellaneous details. Several practical exercises provide students an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of course content. By the end of the training\, participants will possess the knowledge to communicate key details about any set of roadway plans to those interested. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe Key Components of a Set of Roadway Plans\nIdentify Key Elements Found on the Title Sheet\nDescribe the Elements of a Typical Section\nDemonstrate Proper Technique for Locating/Calculating Quantities\nIdentify the Primary Elements of Plan and Profile (P&P) Sheets\nIdentify the Different Drainage Elements on a Set of Plans\nDescribe the Purpose and Elements of a Standard Specification Manual/Where to Locate\nExplain the Purpose of Standard Drawings/Where to Locate\nDemonstrate Grasp of Relationship between Plan & Profile (P&P) Sheets and Cross Section Sheets\n\nPrerequisites: \nNone \nTarget Audience: \nThis training is designed for those who want to learn how to read a set of plans and for personnel who are required to read and understand roadway plans\, and to answer questions about specific items on a set of roadway plans whether involved in the construction and maintenance of roadways. It is for construction workers\, inspectors. \, design engineers or department liaisons\, and for those who just wish to know how to read plans. Previous experience with roadway plan development is not required.

SUMMARY:WTTAP: Managing Roadway Drainage Systems (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Course Summary: \nThis 2.5-hour virtual training teaches participants to manage drainage systems effectively and efficiently. Drainage systems are a key asset to maintain.
