The outcome is for development of an ODOT Deer Disposal Guidance Document that includes the preferred method or methods or best management recommendations for deer disposal that account for considerations of right-of-way (ROW)\, short and long-term costs\, worker safety\, human health\, regulatory compliance\, facilities or space needed\, etc. and consider costs and benefits. SUMMARY:Ohio LTAP: Leveraging Abandoned Railroad Tunnels for Bat Conservation (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Date: August 12\, 2026 \nTime: 10:00 – 11:00am PT \nMillions of North American bats have died from white-nose syndrome (WNS) since 2006. WNS is caused by a fungus\, Pseudogymnoascus destructions\, that is widespread in Europe and Asia but only introduced to North America by humans around 2006. Since its introduction to the area surrounding Albany\, New York\, P. destruction has spread across much of North America\, extending its range to the Pacific coast and the Mexican border. For hibernating bats throughout much of this region\, the fungus has been devastating\, causing populations to decline precipitously and prompting concerns of regional and range-wide extinctions. Although bats are often extirpated from hibernacula once the fungus arrives\, P. destructions can survive in the absence of bats for hosts\, making hibernacula environmental reservoirs for the fungus. WNS is now considered endemic in Ohio\, and bat populations in the state have declined dramatically over the last decade. Unfortunately\, an effective management strategy for promoting recovery of WNS susceptible species does not yet exist. It is therefore notable that winter surveys for hibernating bats in Ohio and Pennsylvania have reported an increased use of abandoned railroad tunnels by two species highly imperiled by WNS: the little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus) and the tricolored bat (Perimyotis subflavus). Indeed\, the largest little brown myotis hibernacula left in Ohio is an abandoned tunnel. While anecdotal\, these observations raise the possibility that these environments may provide bats with a survival advantage. Thus\, abandoned railroad tunnels may provide an opportunity for conservation and management. This research seeks to study these environments in order to create recommendations for creating or enhancing similar habitats for bat conservation. ODOT will receive recommendations for protecting and enhancing abandoned railroad tunnels as bat hibernacula from this study. By identifying hibernacula such as abandoned railroad tunnels that have been overlooked by management efforts in the past.

DESCRIPTION:Trainer: Ed Rufener \nThe Traffic Control technician course is offered as an introduction to the basic principles of temporary work zone traffic control.  This training course is designed to instruct the participants in the underlying principles of temporary traffic control as set forth in the MUTCD. \nIn this course students will be provided with practical knowledge\, techniques\, and instruction on the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices to enable them to apply practical concepts.  This course is recommended for all workers who may be required to handle temporary traffic control devices; and is accepted by UDOT. \nWorkers are required to complete and pass a written examination. Training is good for 4 years. Certificates are no longer sent by ATSSA.  You can get a copy of your certificate from your LTAP account. \nAs a traffic control technician you are meeting the UDOT requirement to maintain and set up traffic control in an active work zone. UDOT requires that you pass the TCT State Specific course with a score of 80%\, have one year (2000 hours) of temporary traffic control experience. This training is valid for four (4) years\, at the end of the four year period you are required to take the course again.  This course teaches you how to correctly place temporary traffic control devices in an active work zone. This course does not certify you to be a flagger. This course is a prerequisite to becoming a Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS). \nThe APWA and UDOT specifications as outlined in Traffic Control 01554 Section 1.9 requires that the Traffic Control Technician be certified by the Department or by the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) as a Traffic Control Technician (TCT). SUMMARY:Ohio LTAP: Investigation of Pavement Performance in Historically Under-Performing Regions (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Date: August 26\, 2026 \nTime: 10:00 – 11:00am \nOver the last couple of decades ODOT has experienced pavement performance that significantly underperforms statewide averages\, in some regions\, for decades. These issues were believed to be primarily caused by poor quality aggregate sources in these regions. District 3 (D3) has experienced the worst historical performance\, but other districts in the region have experienced similar issues as well. Additionally\, many counties adjacent to D3 experience lower performance that is masked when looking at district-wide performance. There have also been complaints of early raveling that may be linked to the same issue. These are likely being exacerbated by other factors such as design practices\, poor-quality control\, poor construction practices\, lack of proper inspection\, lack of proper QA\, etc. Ohio has very different geology across the State and certain Districts only utilize the local materials within their region. Current aggregate specifications need examined to determine their contribution. As noted below\, ODOT has studied these issues in the past and implemented changes to the program that have not resulted in the desired outcome. Due to the cost of pavement performance loss\, further research is warranted to determine the root cause(s) of the regional issues and assess the cost/benefit of any potential changes to ODOT standards and specifications. The objectives of this research include the following: 1. Identify the root cause(s) of poor performance trends in regions of Ohio. 2. Determine the financial impact to ODOT of the performance loss. 3. Develop prioritization of root causes. 4. Recommend methods to eliminate root causes or to moderate root cause effects on performance. Consider how the use of new or emerging technologies could benefit current and future root cause elimination efforts. 5. Develop a cost-benefit analysis with a sensitivity analysis for each proposed method. 6. Develop methods to verify the effectiveness of eliminating or controlling those root causes.

SUMMARY:Ohio LTAP: A Field Evaluation of Perpetual Pavement Concept (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Date: August 27\, 2026 \nTime: 10:00 – 11:00am PT \nThis project will construct a perpetual pavement using Highly Modified Asphalt (HiMA) and validate the perpetual pavement concept in real world conditions by instrumenting and collecting data on a roadway in Ohio. ODOT is interested in the best way to utilize HiMA (i.e.\, asphalt base only\, surface and intermediate only\, or full depth asphalt buildups). The goal of this research is to design\, construct and monitor Ohio’s first perpetual pavement built with HiMA. The results obtained are expected to provide the Office of Pavement Engineering with a model for future design\, as well as the confidence needed to roll out additional designs for perpetual pavements as conditions warrant. The results of this research will: 1. Incorporate the HiMA material into the design and construction to evaluate its cost effectiveness and constructability. 2. Investigate the perpetual pavement design software/concepts as it applies to the perpetual pavement design using the HiMA material. 3. This research has the potential for significant savings for ODOT and the taxpayer.

It also teaches you how to supervise and oversee people in the field.
