Alaska TTAP/LTAP–Gravel Roads: Construction and Maintenance (Nome, AK)
The class will be taught by Matthew Ulberg, Director of the Montana LTAP and Billy Connor, Director of the Alaska TTAP. The class will cover the following topics across the 2-day class:
Design and Construction Topics
- Building on Permafrost
- Drainage concepts
- Typical cross section elements
- Coordination of horizontal and vertical alignment
- Sight distance basics at Intersections and along the alignment
- Signing for conditions or geometry that may violate driver expectations
- Materials and other specifications
- Use of Chlorides and other stabilizing materials
Maintenance concepts:
- Proper use of the motor grader
- Cross slope
- Ditch maintenance
- Shoulder maintenance
- Specifications: Aggregates for gravelroad surfacing
- Reading the road: Understanding what your gravelroad is telling you
- Effective compaction
- Winter maintenance
- Dust management
- Maintenance on permafrost
Photographs and videos will be used to illustrate many key elements of the class. Discussion and participation are highly encouraged. Participants are welcome to contribute photos to the discussions.
Registration Instructions
Please register for the course in the LearningStream system operated by the Alaska LTAP. If you have not used the system previously, you will need to create an account. Seats in the class are allocated based on the organization you are affiliated with, please select the correct organization type. If your organization type is full, please send me an email to be put on the waiting list.
